From 1 July 2025, all private rental properties in New Zealand must fully comply with the Healthy Homes Standards. These standards cover five key areas: heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage, and draught stopping.
The Healthy Homes Standards set minimum requirements for rental property quality, ensuring tenants live in warm, dry homes while helping landlords minimise long-term maintenance issues.
Meeting the standards once isn’t enough — ongoing maintenance is crucial. As a landlord, it is your responsibility to ensure your property continues to meet these levels of compliance.
A signed Healthy Homes statement including the details of the property’s compliance must be included in tenancy agreements.
Landlords who fail to meet these requirements may face significant penalties, so it's essential to stay on top of compliance. For more information on the Healthy Homes Standards, please refer to the Tenancy Services website.
